Day 2 Friday

The comunidad is a treatment center for alcohol and drug abusers as well as a few people with certain mental illnesses. Not exactly the homeless shelter we had expected but none the less great. Our room was in an isolated area of the property, thankfully which allowed us some privacy.

The property was surrounded by some large orange fields. This was an excellent change from the large cities that we have stayed in and made me miss Northern Arizona near Payson. I want forests! Anyways, the property also had a conglomeration of mismatched buildings and plants.

We were introduced to the patients or at least tried to introduce ourselves. At this point we were overwhelmed with the Spanish since it had been almost 2 months that we had spoken just Spanish with people. By the time we left, we were right back into the swing of things and comfortable with speaking Spanish for most of the day.

We also headed back to the main office for additional briefing as well as to meet the president of Patim. His name was Paco and he spoke incredibly fast about a difficult topic. The reality is it one things to be able to speak the basics of a language it’s another thing to speak the particulars about a specific topic. Such as parts of vehicles or medical terminology, things that have specific words with special context. So at times, Krystle and I understood very little of what he was trying to say. This is also where we realized or found out some of what they were expecting of us.

They wanted us to lead “tallers” or workshops over the topic of “machichismo” “genero” “masculindad”. The purpose of changing the culture and perspective of men-dominated culture, gender, and what it meant to be a man or masculine. Yet again a little bit of a surprise of the focus of our time here.
